Frequently Asked Questions
Is the intake fee refundable?
No, the intake fee is non-refundable. It is also important to note that after 90 days of no service the intake process needs to be redone and that will require another intake fee.
How soon can I see my children?
Once you and your co-parent have completed the intake process, we usually can schedule you within a week.
What hours are you available for supervision?
We are available for supervision 365 days a year from 9am to 9pm. However, prime times book up fast. The best way to assure your preferred time is to choose a set time and day every week so you can be added to the calendar repeatedly. Our admin hours are Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm.
What if my co-parent doesn't do their intake?
We will reach out to them 2-3 times to encourage them to comply with the Court's order. If need be we will include their attorney or other court professionals such as GAL's. If they do not comply we can send you an email documenting their lack of compliance and you may have to file a motion to bring it to the Court's attention.
How long does supervision last?
Every case is different ranging from a few weeks to a couple of years. However, most cases last a matter of months. The best thing to do is follow the Court order and strive to have a good report submitted before your next court date.
What if my co-parent doesn't pay their portion of the service ordered by the Court? Does that mean I can't see my children?
If your co-parent is not paying, you are given the option to pay the full amount so that it does not interfere with your parenting time. If a report is requested for the Court we will include parent's non-payment.
Where does supervision take place?
Supervision can take place at our office in Lenexa but generally parents prefer to meet in the community doing something they and their children enjoy. After three sessions, you can ask your supervisor for approval to have supervision in the home.
Can I bring third parties (grandparents, siblings, significant others) to my parenting time?
A supervised parent is required to do a minimum of three sessions before adding others. At that point they must seek approval from their supervisor to add others. Only two third parties are allowed at a time with some exceptions for sibling sets or special occasions such as Thanksgiving dinners etc.
How do I explain to my children what's going on or answer sensitive questions they may have?
Generally a simple answer will suffice such as, "We can't talk about it now but just know I care about you and all the adults are working on figuring things out." With regular supervision the supervisor will help redirect the question. If you are ordered TSPT Therapeutic Supervised Parenting Time then these topics can be discussed with the assistance of the supervisor.
What if I want a different supervisor?
Unless there is a conflict of interest or something egregious has occurred, we do not reassign supervisors. The supervisor may have to redirect a behavior from time to time, or bring something to your attention. Their goal is not to get you in trouble, rather to make sure your time during supervision goes smoothly and the children are physically and emotionally safe.
If I have court the same day I would have had parenting time and am taken off supervision, do I still have to pay or do I get a refund?
Because we have a 48 hour cancellation policy, the fee is still due. This will ensure that we can report that you finished fully in compliance. This compensates the supervisor for holding that time, when they could have been working with another family or making personal plans. If you want to cancel 48 hours before your court date, you can but you risk that time slot not being available if you are kept on supervision.
How long should a residential parent wait for a supervised parent if they are running late?
We usually give the supervised parent 15 minutes to arrive before cancelling parenting time. The late parent would be responsible for the full cost of that day's parenting time.
Can I get a copy of my or my co-parent's report?
The Courts request the reports go directly to them. You can have your attorney or yourself if Pro Se, request a copy of the report from the Court's AA (Administrative Assistant). They generally will share but not always.
What if I want a report but my co-parent refuses to pay for it?
You always have the option of paying for it in full, to make sure one is submitted. The report will show who paid for it.
How do I get a hold of admin staff on the phone?
Our preference is that communications be done via email. If you send an email to admin@safepassagekc.com someone will get back to you within 24 business hours. If a call is still necessary the admin staff will reach out to you.
